Born on 24 March 1986 in Kota Bharu, Irwan spent 13 years of his childhood in Perak, 2 years in Kedah, and now he is in Class of 2009 in a University in United States.

His passion is mainly in investment and business. He is now pursuing his degree in Electrical Electronic Engineering. He made his first business transaction when he was in Standard 6, selling 20 cent Keropok Ubi to his friends. Up until now, he managed to earn over a quarter million Ringgit in revenue selling various item through the net. He enjoys reading books about investing, engineering-thinking and auto-biography of people who have changed the world. Besides that, he also favors self-improvement books by Anthony Robbins and Edward de Bono. To him, getting rich is not about getting a degree and a high-paying job, but it is about a continuous journey on how to manage the money better, making the money works harder for the owner.

On his journey to financial freedom:

This journey may or may not have a definite end. I might end up with no better wealth at all. In this journey, no matter how wrong a turn is, I will take it; for a man who makes no mistakes, makes nothing. –Irwan

For the time being he defines financial freedom as:

To have a steady income from either investment or business that require no active effort or both that exceed the outflow of expenses.

He is now enjoying his final year in the States.

Love your blog. You deserve more readers. I am currently finding financial bloggers for a new financial website and investor community. In addition to a revenue share of contextual advertising, you may promote whatever you’d like on your posting pages. Is this something you would be interested in?

My name is Kevin Han and I’m a student from Penang, Malaysia. I’m currently doing an online MSC dissertation with Portsmouth University,UK and I’ve chosen Blogging for Business as my dissertation topic. I’m hoping to investigate the usefulness, effectiveness and also the experiences of blogging in business. In order to do this, I need to interview a number of small business bloggers and was wondering whether you would be willing to take part in this project. I will be carrying out the interview through e-mail, VOIP or MSN messenger, whichever suits you best. I would like to sample a number of small businesses who are blogging and I feel sure that you would be able to provide some valuable information and also insights.

Very few people see the importance of the blog as a useful tool in their small business and thus it will be interesting to see how blogging for business is viewed from the bloggers’ perspective in this paper. Of course, you’d have full access to the final paper and the usual undertakings regarding confidentiality/anonymity would apply.

I do hope that you will be interested in participating in this paper. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Just a note, your adsense implementation with images near AdSense ads is ILLEGAL.

  14. #14 by Irwan on April 17, 2007 - 5:03 am

    Hello Mr Liew,
Thanks for your consent. I have reread the policy clarification about images placement inline with google adsense. As far as I understand, the image cannot be located beside adsense if they would confuse the images to be associated with the ads. just like images of orange in fruit-themed website.

In my case, the images does not resemble anything that could be associated with my adsense contents, which is financial/investment. there are just some abstract, colourful image that attract customer to look at them.

However, I’ll write to adsense team. And thanks again for your consent.

  15. #15 by aad_lfcfn on May 2, 2007 - 1:39 pm

hi Irwan, need clarification here. So what’s Adsense team replied about it? Did they permitted us to use the images supplied with the Adsense Beautifier plugin?

Anyway congrats for the nice blog and informative, I like your words , sort of motivate others to see financial freedom is not close to materialistic element. OK welcome home …

hai..camnela nak melabur kalo student cam saye ni hidup ngan ptptn jer, itupon sparuh..sigh..
    where do i start?

  20. #20 by Irwan on May 25, 2007 - 3:53 pm

like in one of kakti’s blog post, the real enemy is procrastination. sy cadangkan bro safwan start saving money from now… RM50 sebulan ke, ikutlah asalkan start saving. satu tips utk saving ialah saving dulu baru belanje, sebab bile dah blanje sure x cukup duit utk saving. manuasia memang x penah cukup ngan pendapatan semasa, so saving first ke, saving last, duit memang akan rase x cukup. tapi klo kite simpan sblum belanja, kite still ade duit utk saving even though perasaan x cukup duit still ade.

  21. #21 by Irwan on May 25, 2007 - 3:58 pm

oh.. tetinggal bab mane nak simpan. utk starting ni, kite kene ikut risk profile kite. klo blh terima risk yg byk, blh simpan tempat yg risky cam mutual fund, equity dan sebagainye. klo utk conservative punye saving, blh masuk bond, tabung haji, fixed deposit dan lain2…

rasenye tabung haji cam ok gak… tapi sy x selidik ngan mendalam lg.

  22. #22 by safwan on May 28, 2007 - 8:46 am

tapi saya amat mementingkan pelaburan yang halal yang diterima oleh syarak..riba2 ni i prefer notla..as long as i can avoid it..i’ll try..

  23. #23 by Laksamana on June 22, 2007 - 1:00 am

hi, just stumbled upon this website. must say it’s contents are quite informative. it is great to realize the importance of financial knowledge at such a young age. you have time as your ally now. For the past one year, i have been studying and doing research about investments which includes Fixed deposits, unit trusts, real estates, share market and land bankings. so while comparing other UT’s return rate to ASB’s, i stumbled upon this website.

let us all think smart and retire wise!

  24. #24 by shahgti on June 30, 2007 - 6:46 pm

hi irwan, really proud of you as at yr age you already hv vision on what is financial freedom is all about. i always write & exchange ideas with others in one of forum at cari.com.my regarding investment/passive income/business. my yearly passive income is only RM38k and still not enough to support my monthly spending before i can declare my financial freedom. still a long way to go.

  25. #25 by Irwan on June 30, 2007 - 9:36 pm

RM38k per year?! that’s a lot already. at least for me and half of Malaysia populations. Well, there is nothing for me to proud of. Everybody has that kind of vision, to live financially free, to get a lot of money and to get big houses and cars; those are common. and as you said it, it’s still a long way to go, even much longer for me. I just hope when I’m going to step in the working stage of my life, I’ll be much more prepared than now.

  26. #26 by Zulkarnain on July 6, 2007 - 10:58 am

    Hi Irwan,
I’ve an ASB loan of 200K and now I’m thinking of investing in one of the Mutual Funds which I might start from my EPF Acc 1.Which one do you recommends the best, in terms of the returns and also the risks coz I dunno anything abtout MF’s.Or shud I just play it safe with ASB?

  27. #27 by kkchow23 on July 6, 2007 - 8:37 pm

    Hi Zulkarnain,

Unit trust actually helps in term of giving a higher return compare to us putting in fixed deposit (FD)/ Employees Provident Fund (EPF). How high the return depend on how much risk we can tolerate and also the performance of the fund. Roughly for high risk-taker, we can go for equity funds. For moderate risk-taker, it’ll be either balanced or dividend funds. For conservative, bond funds.

Currently FD gives out bout 3.8% and EPF bout 5.15%. If we have the option to choose to invest in others which can give us higher return, then why not we try? It’s just that we must know how much risk we can tolerate. Do we need to use money currently or in the near future? Can we hold the use of money at the moment, let’s say 3 years?

We have to financially plan before doin investment. There’s always risk when investing in Mutual Funds/Unit Trusts.

As in your case, if your not planning to use your money in your EPF for education, housing, etc.. Then you can try opt out some of it for investment in unit trust. Moreover, you’ll have to keep at least RM50,000 in your Acc 1. We can’t take out everything even if we wanted to.

Public Mutual, subsidiary of Public Bank have been winning most awards for 4 years in a row. This gives a good track record of its performance. This is in terms of meeting few criterias which are consistent return, preservation and total return. This doesn’t mean that other banks are not performing, but in terms of choosing the right funds to invest in.

If you’re really interested to know more bout Public Mutual and funds available, you can try contact me for more details.

    Assalamualaikum Irwan,

Am very impressed with yr site. Have been subscribing to your entries for quite sometime. At a very young age, you already set a goal for financial freedom. You have very good knowledge on the various financial instruments. I never expected you to be so young, still a student and giving sound financial advice to your older brothers and sisters in this community. Keep it up.

BTW, plse include me in yr agent directory. Thks.

The basis of investment is FW=PW(1 R) to the power of N, where FW=FutureWorth, PW=Present worth or your capital, R=Return, N=No of Years.

Your moving of money from Account 1 is actually shifting from R=5% investment vehicle into higher R investment vehicle, where the longer the term, it is exponentially higher.

Come and invest with Public Mutual. Rgds Mohd Basir Ahmad, Unit Trust Consultant / Agency Supervisor 017-3355733 mbasira@yahoo.com or refer to http://www.publicmutual.com.my , to gauge, use capital Preservation and Consistency of return.

    Hai Irwan,

Juz read ur blog for the first time and i’m very impressed on how you manage ur life. i’m actually a pharmacist for already 1 year, but the way i handle with money..what can i say..HORRIBLE!i have no savings at all since i like to spend my money a lot, not to shop, but more to go out and juz to have fun.i did try a few times to save but i ended up taking it back to survive for the month.i already have some debts on a credit card (thank God i only have 1 card), not much, but i still have to pay which affects my budgeting every month. so, right now, i planning to start my investment in ASB but don’t know much about it. I would really appreciate to if u can share or give some advices on how to manage my money well so i can live much more comfortable and with lots of savings. I’ve read a book written by Azizi Ali(which my mom forced me to read, heh), and i must say its a brilliant book to give u an idea on how to manage our money. so, i hope that u can suggest to me any beginner related books that can help me as i am juz starting to manage my life a little bit better. Hope to hear from u soon. Thanks

    Hi Mr Irwan,

could you please touch about the subprime crisis and what it really is?

  37. #37 by nadlique on November 11, 2007 - 10:29 pm

    Hey al-hafiz,

Just thought I might add to your subprime crisis question.

Basically, subprime loans are loans given to people who have low-credit rating. These are high-risk loans. Back then in 2003, interest rate was low. People started to go “trigger-happy” in taking up new loans. As the year goes by, interest rates went up and these people start to have trouble with their mortgage repayments. The problem then starts to affect the whole US market as we know what’s happening today.

Well, you need to go into further detail on this issue. Can’t explain it all in this comment box.

  38. #38 by al-hafiz on November 12, 2007 - 10:27 am

all of you are so baguz laa, if all malaysians have passion in investment, no doubt malaysia’s GDP could growth to two digit in nearest time..->be expert and stick in what you do.

    Passion will drive knowledge.

  39. #39 by Irwan on November 12, 2007 - 12:47 pm

just update with a subprime crisis post. hope it’s useful.

  40. #40 by al-hafiz on November 12, 2007 - 11:01 pm

Irwan!! thanks for the subprime crisis post. since your blog well known to investors especially those interested in mutual fund(me too), just want to grab this peluang and ask your favor to open thread or topic about stocks or ‘main saham’. most people said stocks is very risky, but for me this statement just for people which trade blindly, with no trading plan, trade on tips rumors and have no foundation of market knowledge. The stock market is considered one of the three cash mountains of wealth creation you know.Irwan, if you say yes to my suggestion, aku mesti tidur lewat nye to read all the post about saham.I’m so surprise that you are so young but I just 2 years older than you.still satu kepala laa..

    Salam br. Irwan,

My hope is, you hang on to what you’re doing now…insyaallah, god willing, you’ll be successful more than what you dreamt of..!
Biar dada panas membara, tapi kepala kena sentiasa dingin. Stay cool bro!
