How to calculate ASB dividend and bonus

Many of us get confused when they received ASB yearly statement. So with some help from forumers, I have compiled the way to calculate ASB dividend and bonus.

Calculating Dividend

ASB dividend is computed monthly but it will be distributed annually. Let say PNB have declared that this year dividend rate is 7%. This is how to calculate your dividend:

monthly dividend income= 0.07 / 12 x minimum balance
Annual dividend income ( this will be shown up in you balance) = sum of monthly dividend for that year

Calculating Bonus:

Bonus is given to minimum monthly bonus for the past 10 years (120 months). Bonus will be most beneficial to those who have been saving for at least 10 years. Let’s say ASB bonus is 2% this year.To calculate Bonus:

monthly bonus = 0.02/120 x minimum monthly balance

When i said monthly balance, it is not this year’s months only, but including the months’ from the past 10 years.
this year bonus = sums of monthly bonus for the past 120 months

Example: Let’s say that you just invest for 4 years (48 months) and your average monthly balance for the past 48 months is $1000. So the bonus will be 48 x ( 0.02/120 x 1000) = $8

So that’s how to calculate the bonus and dividend for ASB. Any correction and question please put in the comment section below. t

I just need more examples on these calculations (both for dividend and bonus).

The scenario (as i believe most malays adopt – i’m talking about ASB here) is how to calculate if one makes a monthly investment (say RM200) and say he/she has been investing for the past 2 years.

How do i calculate the amount (dividend and bonus) from the above investment for the end of Year 2. For the sake of simplicity, we assume the dividend rate is 7% for that past 2 years.

    Thanx for your time…

Hope to hear some response from you soon.

  4. #8 by Irwan on September 26, 2006 - 9:05 pm

hi sorry for late reply.I missed out ur comment in this post.

Basically, the dividend is counted on monthly based but paid annually.

Let say, you invest RM200 everymonth, and the rate that year is 7%.

to get the rate for every month in that year, 7% is divided by 12: 0.583%

use this rate ( 0.583%) and multiply with with your lowest balance everymonth.

    For example, in January, you get Rm200 x 0.583% = RM1.167
    For example, in February, you get Rm400 x 0.583% = RM2.333

and so on. At the end of the year, the sum of montly dividend is paid into your account.

    Hope this will help.

Is the calculation of ASB dividend & bonus distribution that you present accurate? Actually, i didn’t apply and didn’t test as what you present here, but i’d a calcualtion in excel file and i found it quiet accurate , and maybe have +/- RM 20 on it.

But, i will try to follow your step on how it being calculated. BRB 🙂

  6. #10 by Irwan on December 24, 2006 - 12:06 pm

actually the calculation is based on dividend only where the bonus is not included. i’ll try to include the bonus in my next web-based calculator.

  7. #11 by Mýr on February 19, 2007 - 10:31 am

Oh! Now I know where the bonus figure is coming from. Thanks.

  8. #12 by wan on April 26, 2007 - 3:21 pm

hi irwan, i’m new to ur site. i dont really get it how to calculate the bonus. you wrote “Bonus is given to minimum monthly bonus for the past 10 years (120 months).” does it means, monthly bonus is calculated based on what value is the minimum amount for that month , or the minimum amount since last the 10 years?

    btw, very informative site.

  9. #13 by Irwan on April 27, 2007 - 1:50 am

hi wan.. thanks for visiting my blog.

it’s monthly minimum balance. so let’s say the bonus this year is 0.02 (2%), the bonus for this year is the sum of

(0.02/120 )*( minimum balance for each month for the last 120 months)

  10. #14 by wan on April 27, 2007 - 11:39 pm

thanks irwan, just to confirm with u..
    say for 1st two years, 1st yr bonus 2%, 2nd yr 3%
yr 1 bonus = (0.02/120)*(sum of min balance from month 1 to month 12)
yr 2 bonus is (0.03/120)*(sum of min bal from month 1 to month 24)
    am i right?

  11. #15 by Irwan on April 28, 2007 - 12:07 am

the first month should be the month of the last 10 years,

yr 1 bonus = (0.02/120)*(sum of min balance from month-1 of the last 10 years to current month 12)

  12. #16 by wan on April 28, 2007 - 3:52 pm

ermmm…, but if it’s ur 1st yr of investment, u dont have bal from month 1 of the last 10yr right?

  13. #17 by Irwan on April 29, 2007 - 3:10 am

yes it is… you won’t get much from bonus part if you just invested

i think u confused about dividend and bonus. it’s different thing. dividend is for 12months, while bonus is for 120 months. Let say dividend is 7% and bonus 2%:

    yr 1 dividend= (0.02/12)*(sum of min balance from month-1 to month-12 of year-1)

yr 1 bonus = (0.02/120)*(sum of min balance from month-1 of the last 10 years to current month-12) in this case all the previous months will be considered 0.

Sorry, i tak clear sgt how’s the calculation ..
    Let say,
i start my investment with capital RM5000 on January.
the following month, starting from February onwards, i just pay rm100 permonth.

So how’s the calculation will be?
    The dividend and the bonus?

  18. #22 by Irwan on August 21, 2007 - 9:44 pm

for that kind of calculation, u better use our ASB calculator. you can get it here.

the tips on how to use it also there.

The returns from ASB are not that attractive after all. Anywhere, great to come to this site.

  20. #24 by Fazli on November 16, 2007 - 11:01 am

    Hi Irwan

Thanks for your explanation. I would like to know how they determine the minimum monthly balance. Is there any cut off date for each month? As you may have known there is a lot of transaction within each month. Even for each individual there will be several transaction in a month such as withdrawal and top up.

  21. #25 by MackSlick on January 21, 2008 - 11:24 am

Then my insurance agent is giving me some investment plan now, with a net rate of 6.78% per annum but may go up depending on the market rate. Also is the same concept, RM150 per month and i can withdraw after 20 years onwards. If this is the case, which is more worth it? ASB or insurance? From the calculation formula above, i can see that ASB has higher returns (I havent included the bonus yet but ive saving since young so should be over 20 years), but without any medical benefits. Any advice would be appreciated.

    mengikut yang ditetapkan..Pelaburan maximum ASB
= RM 200,000.00.SO, jika ASB loan saya ialah 50,000 tambah simpanan saya ialah 150,000.00…adakah kiraan dividen dann bonus ASB masih diagihkan?ataupun mati di situ sahaja?

    • #36 by Nizami on March 6, 2009 - 10:20 am

The limit is 200k, so if you have >200k, then the calculated balance for interest and bonus will be based on 200k only.
So, it is advisable for you to withdraw the excess and invest it in another fund, ASW or ASD.

      • #37 by OM on May 6, 2009 - 12:02 pm

that’s not true sir. the interest and bonus are based on the available amount in the ASB account.

say u have 250k (basic plus div after some years) from Jan 08 to Dec 08, and with 8% interest, the div obtained in Jan 09 will be 20k (ie. [250k*12]/12*8%).

200k is the limit anyone can deposit, but not the base of calculation (div & bonus). hope im right.

    1) jika sekiranya peminjam gagal menjelaskan bayaran adakah bunga masih dikenakan?.
    2) Sebelum saudara/i membuat keputusan untuk meminjam, coba kira jumlah pembayaran = Bulanan RM x jumlah bulan melangsaikan hutang.

Insyaallah pulangan melebihi apayang ditawarkan ASB… Jika tidak apa pilihan anda?

    Need advise here..
Which is more profitable, Option1 or Option2?
Is the Dividen & Bonus calculation the same for both options?

    ASB loan: rm50k
    Loan tenure: 25 years
    Monthly inst: rm263

Manually deposit into ASB book: rm263 (every month)
    Duration: 25 years

    Awaiting reply.

    • #59 by Zaudan on January 21, 2010 - 9:59 pm

just to share but i also confuse
      In my opinion…

      Option one is more profitable…
That because ur minimum monthly balance is always RM 50000 from month 1 to 12..for 25 years if ur takeout the interest portion…

If u select option 2, ur minimum monthly balance will be 263 in 1st month,526 in second and so on…
So the dividend very low…not as much as option 1…

Terdapat
byk perkara yg dsembunyikan oleh pihak bank untuk ‘perkhidmatan’ ni..e.x interest yg dikenakan kpd pelaggan sekiranya gagal menjelaskan bayaran setiap bulan(xkan nak guna dividen asb untuk byr semua 2,cne nak tingkatkan dividen yg kita perolehi dalam tahun2 berikutnya, kalo cm ni better korg simpan sendiri tiap2 bulan)

Currently invested RM200k, started just this month. My wife also is doing the same plan. Based on the 7/2 principle on investing in ASB with calculation of just 7% dividen 2% bonus calculation within 11-12 years we manage to be millionaire couple with owing the bank monthly about RM1234.00 individually. we made the 1st contract of RM50K for 15 years loan and the following contract RM150k for 25 years loan. After 15 years we have only have to commit about RM860.00 individually to our loan commitment.
I’ve found that this is a best way to get a retirement get away. Due by the time we retired we would have the bonus of our pension plus the ASB saving that would accumulate up to 1 million each. About House loan and car loans its covered in our total household income, about our 3 under 7 year old children future, education insurance policy is backing us up. overall we have balance about RM3K monthly balance of household income and it is increasing yearly, and RM30K in savings account to back us up in case or emergencies (were thinking of putting it in FD)…Note we are gov servants in the early thirties.

So what do u think of the plan to be a couple of millionaire after 10-11 years, the safest way with the least risk…And the best part is paying the cost of lending of RM125K minimum at total individually with intention to settle it as it is by contract.

Of course the loan is insured and will be willed to our children by end of this year.

Funny thing about 7/2 (7% dividen / 2% bonus)is i thought it was 7 years for 2 person. but fits the scenario as well lol.

weena :saudaraku muslimin muslimat, ASB is non Shariah compliance, macamana kalau penat2 simpan duit tapi duit tu tak bersih. Bila ada opportunity yang Shariah compliance, grab the opportunity. Unit Trust ada macam2 product Islamic Compliance. My own experience, I have doubled my savings in 5 years, hardly to get kalau i simpan dalam ASB..[Reply]

macam mana nak kira kalau saya buka tahun 1990 untuk RM1000 and 8 tahun kemudian saya tambah duit, dan 2 tahun kemudian saya tambah duit lagi. Macam mana nak kira bonus?

Pada perhatian aku maybank is the best bank provide asb loan compare wth other bank…..If you want to know more just contact me

  69. #82 by Ken Master on December 27, 2010 - 4:13 am

You still get dividen even you withdraw all your money end of november.
    10010 x 11 = 110110
    110110/12 = 9175.83 ( Your monthly Average)
    If ASB dividend 7.5%
    9175.83 x 0.075 = 688.18

Your will get Dividend RM 688.18

ASB dividend calculate by monthly average…

1.Mula2 anda kena tahu berapa amount duit pada setiap akhir bulan (31hb or 30hb).

Total end month amount 12 month (for 1year) / 12 = Monthly Average
Monthly Average (setahun) x ASB % = Dividen ASB

  71. #84 by Ken Master on December 27, 2010 - 4:34 am

  72. #85 by Ken Master on December 27, 2010 - 4:36 am
