Explaining the ASB Loan Plus OD Method

As I have promised, here is the explanation of the ASB loan with OD facility. You can download the Bahasa Malaysia Version in my earlier post. This is not a step-by-step guide as I haven’t try the method myself. Instead, I will try to explain the concept behind this method.

First of all, you basically need 3 stuffs to make this method working.

  • A significant amount of ASB saving (this can be either from your saving or loan)
  • An overdraft facility against the ASB account above.
  • Credit Card

1. When you have these 3 items, the first thing that must do is to pay all outstanding balance in your credit card (CC) account.

This step is to avoid paying expensive 18% charges by CC providers. Instead, you only have to pay (7%) OD fees.

2. When you receive your first paycheck for the month, put 70% of your paycheck to OD account, and 30% to your ASB account

You want to do this because you can save OD fees by reducing the balance as soon as possible. Remember that OD fee is charged daily. Meaning, the balance in OD is charge 0.0191% (7% divide by 365) daily. The 30% investment is to grow your ASB account as you get more benefits investing in ASB than saving OD fees.

3. Use your CC for the bills and other expenses that are payable by CC. Don’t spend more than you usually do. If not, you won’t be able to improve your financial state.

Why use CC? CC enables you to use money free (for 50 days) without paying any fee if you can clear the balance before Due Date. If you instead use your OD account, you’ll be charge 0.0191% daily. So from alternative point of view, you are actually saving 0.0191% daily.

4. Pay your CC balance only at the Due Date for the current month (which is usually next month). Use the money from OD to clear all your balance. If you spend less that you should with your CC, make a cash advance from your CC (I could only advice doing so when there aren’t much fee to do cash advance)

The reason to pay at the due date is to maximize saving by delaying the use of money from OD account. For the cash advance part, please do not do this if you are charged expensive fee to make cash advance.

5. For the expenses that need cash, withdraw it from your OD account.

Please minimize the usage of OD this way.

6. Repeat the process for the next month.

As pointed out by one of the comments in my first post, this method is highly effective if you have substancial amount of credit card outstanding balance. This is because you can avoid 18% charges by moving the balance to your OD account. I’m not sure how much saving you could get if you are debt-free as what you could save is only the 0.0191% daily OD fees for maximum of 50 days.

OD method is not that easy to follow as you need to micromanage your money by remembering the important dates, paying your CC at due date and so on. I could only advice this method if you have CC debt. Other than that, it’s not worth the trouble and the risk.

If you have any comment or opinion or want to correct me, please use the comment section below.

    ok…got the idea.

Does it only works if you have CC debt? How about if you have personal loan outstanding? Sesuai ke kalau kita buat another personal loan, apply OD with ASB Cert, then pay off the CC. Monthly installment guna OD account? Kalau every month memang cash flow sentiasa negative macam mana? lama kelamaan OD akan habis digunakan. Brapa lama ambil masa untuk payoff the personal loan?

Please explain to me. Kita guna example ye.

  2. #2 by Irwan on August 9, 2007 - 2:17 pm

The objective of OD method is to reduce expensive interest of CC and replace it with cheaper OD interest. It’s not about how to spend more than than we earn.

back to the questions, blh je klo buat another personal loan(klo blh la). as long as you don’t use the personal loan for any other purpose except ASB.

Yeap, monthly installment gune OD, tp bile gaji masuk kite kurangkan balik penggunaan OD. So xde la dia abis cepat sgt.

bab personal loan tu x sure sebab dia depends on lenders.

  3. #3 by eisya on August 13, 2007 - 3:41 pm

    ok…thank you for your explanation.

Let say ada outstanding PL 10k @ 5.6% (masa apply dulu; 4 yr to serve) and CC 5k.

    Mana option paling baik.
    1. Dapat loan, bayar PL 10k dulu, then masuk dalam
    ASB,apply OD 20K, pay CC 5K n use 4K from OD
    2. Dapat loan, bayar PL 10k, use 4K. Balance 16K masuk
ASB,apply OD. Bayar CC 5K guna OD.
    3. Dapat loan, masuk terus dalam ASB 30K, then baru keluar
duit dari OD bayar PL 10K, CC 5k and use 4K.

MAna satu yek nak pilih. Try guna excel, tapi still tak tau nak decide.

alamak susahnye soklan cik eisya… kene grad jd financial advisor baru blh jawab kot.haha

nak tanye dulu. ikutkan soklan outstanding PL tu still kene bayar bulan2(ikut scheduled) or dah terlepas bayar bulan2? I’ll answer with former assumption ye.

Kalau ikutkan, jgn abiskan PL 10K dgn cepat. Sebab cik eisya dpt gune duit tu dgn murah (5.7%). just teruskan bayaran cam biase. duit yg cik eisya ade tu gune utk lain2 tp ikut priority berikut:

    1. settle CC (to avoid 18% fee)
    2. further investment ASB (to gain 7.5 %)
    3. reduce OD (avoid 6.9% fee)

step 2 ngan 3 tu blh campur sebab x byk beze dan saling sangkut paut. klo invest dalam ASB, sure kene gune OD utk kegunaan lain. Klo gune OD plak, blh kekalkan or tambah investment dalam ASB. tp klo nak maximize, masuk semua dalam ASB.

    Dear Irwan,

Akak baru tau calculation daily rest..cenggitu rupenya..hahah..okeh..let’s say, i got this AIA homeloan which offers 5.99% fixed date daily rest, the calculation should be..:-

    1) 0.0599 / 365 X 170 000 (loan amount) = 27.89 (which is charged daily, kan? So maknenya, kalu sebulan = 30 hari, interest that i should pay for that particular mth = 27.89 x 30 = 836.70/mth

    2) kalu monthly rest plak..0.0599 / 12 X 170 000 = 848.58/mth

betui tak dik irwan? then, I can reduce the interest by pay the installment sekerap mungkin..if possible daily..betui dak?..

hmm..syok jugak exploring memende around us yg actually all the while we just leave it like that..( hmm..it is applicable only for me..donno others..;-).).thanks Irwan for this informative blog..

alamak dik..akak sebenanye dh tekeluar tajuk arr…

  7. #7 by Irwan on August 13, 2007 - 6:14 pm

pengiraan kak su tu tepat skali. kelebihan daily rest ni dia blh reducekan interest fee klo kite cepat bayar. contohnye, klo tetibe blanje ari ni terlebih RM10, terus gune utk extra payment. so blh save interest utk additional RM10 tu. (contoh saje)

tp daily rest gak blh tambah interest klo terlewat bayar.

    hello..
i brje jumpa thread nogold tu bulan lepas(aug)..the thread is 300 pages..and it took me 4 weeks just to reach 110 pages n understand the concepts

i dah buat simulation by using excel…and it seems proven..i buat simulation tu dgn objektif..nak tgk baper tahun i perlu ia amik utk ada 100K dalam ASB..well the anwser is 6 years or less depending on your startup amount..the assumption case for the simulation are as below :

    1) salary rm3000 fix for 6 years and i have cash 10K only in ASB
    2) OD interest 7% for 6 yrs
    3) ASB interest 7% for 6 yrs
    4) ada hutang kredit kad 8K in the 1st year
    5) FIX rm300 for enjoy purposes for 6 yrs
    6) no CC use for 6 yrs

    wut a beauty of OD/ASB huh…

    Hi all,

I have something that I wanted to add regarding this ASB/OD. If you are husband and wife, I suggest that you don’t use cash advanced from credit card, instead, both husband and wife open ASB/OD each, e.g. husband 25k (OD1) and 15k for wife (OD2). Use OD1 as your main OD, all payment must be from this account and all paycheck should be deposited into this account.

What you can do is pay 10k from OD2 to OD1 on the 30th of every month (using cheque), and pay back from OD1 to OD2 on the 6th of every month (using cheque). This way, you can extend your balance of OD1 up to 2 years (provided that you strictly save 30% of total income in ASB and only spent 70% of total income).

Your OD will reduced over time, this is where your saving will come into action. DO NOT pay the OD using cash from your ASB saving, instead convert the ASB savings to sijil and top-up your reduced OD with that sijil. This way you still have the benefits of receiving divident from your ASB while your OD limit increased.

I hope my explanation does not confused anybody since this method takes at least 2-3 years (based on your savings)before you can take full advantage of the systems.

  10. #11 by azr on July 15, 2008 - 3:57 pm

    1. As the discussion here is more on the conventional 7% OD interest rate. I guess there are more competitive rate somewhere. It would be great if you guys (the knowledgeable fellas) can direct us to the best deal in town.

    2. What are the miscellaneous fees are like to have an OD.

  11. #12 by Azman on July 25, 2008 - 4:39 pm

I just started to use this method this month. I use RHB OD (Rate BLR + 0%). BLR = 6.75%.

I pledged RM11,000 Sijil ASB and get RM10,450 OD Facility in Current Account.

I activate my old savings account in RHB and link the current account with the ATM card. I also activate the Internet Banking to ease bills payment and fund transfer.

I am in the process to apply for RHB credit card to facilitate the payment for my expenses.

My short term aim is to save RM1,000 every month. My long term aim is to settle my credit card debts within 18 o 24 months. I also hope this OD can help my online business (if I need money to buy stock).

I hope I can regularly update this comment to assist all readers and also to get feedback from other readers.

thank you azman, your effort is much appreacited.

  12. #14 by Azman on August 1, 2008 - 10:51 am

I am also looking into doing what MatJin suggested – use 2 OD facilities. My wife is already applying OD at RHB also.

I have a friend who is trying to do the same thing with Bank Mualamat. He has to open Bank Muamalat’s Investment account at RM30,000. Bank Muamalat does not accept ASB. Anyway, the OD will be base on Islamic Banking.

    Wassalam

  13. #15 by Azman on August 20, 2008 - 11:36 pm

Just want to update – last month service fee for this facility is only RM50 @ RHB. Now RM150 and you need to open up current account at only RM20.

    Cheers

  14. #16 by Azman on September 11, 2008 - 8:44 pm

Hi All, MBB juga dah offer OD Islamic and boleh guna ASB as collateral. Dia bagi 90% margin. BFR + 1.5% –> fixed profit rate. Cara apply mudah – slip gaji, ea form dan photocopy IC.

    • #19 by OM on May 6, 2009 - 12:12 pm

      khair,
reduce the amount in current account to minimum level as such enuf to maintain ur monthly expense ie. pay loan, makan and so on, transfer most of them to ASB to obtain higher return.

current account does give interest max 1% (or less) peryear.

      peace

Saya memang tak berapa faham sgt pasal duit ni. Minta bro Irwan selesaikan cara yang terbaik.
    1. Pendapat la ni RM 6000 sebulan
    2. Pinjaman ASB Maybank RM 200 ribu.

Macamana nak handle masalah ni sebab tiba nak hujung bulan je mesti sengkek jugak.

    • #21 by Jr Banker on May 28, 2009 - 11:57 pm

      irwana;
      1) ASB Loan RM200K tu x boleh buat OD psl sijil dh dipegang oleh pihak Bank. Kalau nk wat OD melalui sijil ASB kena jual sijil ASB tu (maksudnya cancel ASB Loan).

      2) Pas tu, klu ada duit sendiri masukkan ke dlm ASB. Klu x de, wat pinjaman peribadi.

      3) Pas tu, convert baki akaun ASB ke bentuk sijil.

      4) Pas tu, cagar-kan sijil utk dpt-kan OD.

Hrp fhm la mende kat atas tu. Ni baru langkah pertama.

    stabillo,

    Assalamu’alaikum semua,

    Tumpang lalu
    Dari pendapat saya:
OD (Overdraft) ade pelbagai jenis dan untuk specific OA ASB, hanya ada beberapa bank (yg ada buat urusan ASB) sahaja yg offer sprt CIMB, RHB, and MBB. Ari tu CIMB ade offer OD interest BLR – 2%.

    Bagaimana OD dibuat dari ASB?
    =============================
    1) Jika di dlm ASB mempunyai simpanan
RM10,000 nilai sijil)
=> cagarkan sijil ASB ke bank² pilihan utk membuat OD
=> bank akan open current account with the amount of 95% from nilai sijil.

    2) Jika membuat pinjaman ASB
=> pinjaman disbursed ke akaun ASB dlm bentuk sijil (sijil dipegang olh pihak bank). Dlm buku takkan nampak value pinjaman tu

    Dear everybody,

Let say I plan not to use or apply any CC bcoz i know i dont need CC yet. I just keep using the money from OD account and pay what i can paid in the end of the month.
So, is it I’m losing something in term of reducing interest if i keep doing like tat.
    Can Somebody clarified to me?

kalau gaji bersih tinggal 30% je daripada gaji pokok..camne nak selamatkan diri ni..tinggal beberapa bank saja lagi belum buat PL …yang lain semua duit gaji hakmilik dituntu oleh bank..adakah pinjaman OD/ASB boleh menyelamatkan keadaan?

    sekadar bertanya

buat OD utk tambah simpanan asb bleh ker? camana nak maksimumkan ASB tuh

    salam,

saya baru nak plan buat OD daripada 10K sijil ASB.

Saya still confuse berkenaan daily rate calculation.

seandainya akaun OD 10K kosong dalamnya & interest 7%(0.02% daily), adakah betul kiraan berikut:

    1hb – 10K
    2hb – 10K x 1(hari) x 0.02% = 10,002
    3hb – 10K x 2(hari) x 0.02% = 10,004
    |
    |
    31hb- 10K x 30(hari)x 0.02% = 10,060

Just nak estimate how long i can get back my sijil if i’m constantly bank in money into my OD every month.

    TQ

How about comparing between taking OD vs taking personal loan? which is better ?  nowadays personal loan rate can be much lower! as compared to OD!
